Coastal Prehistory and Submerged Landscapes

AIMS OF THE COMMISSION

  1. To provide a forum for the comparative study and interpretation of coastal archaeological sites in all coastal regions of the world, with particular reference to shell middens and shell mounds

  2. To facilitate comparative studies of marine molluscs from archaeological sites and to encourage the development of new techniques particularly those associated with microscopic and biomolecular analyses of mollusc shells and other organic remains from shell middens

  3. To promote the investigation of submerged landscapes and underwater and intertidal traces of prehistoric settlement

  4. To provide support for the protection of coastal archaeological landscapes and raise scientific and public awareness of their importance

  5. To conduct the work of the commission in the spirit of age and gender equality and to actively promote the participation of women and early stage researchers

  6. To organise from time to time meetings and symposia to facilitate contact, discussion and knowledge exchange
